Unusual notions

Transnatural creates distinctive projects that align with the needs of circumstances, the client’s identity and philosophy. Newly developed, unusual material notions are frequently the starting points. This approach leads to unique (custom) designs that also provide sensory and immersive experiences.

Transnatural guides concept creation, research, material experimentation, and production methods. We support throughout the artistic, design, and production processes, while fostering collaboration between makers, clients institutes, technologists, companies, and other experts. This results in truly unique outcomes in balance with different types of spaces and ecologies, from which you find some examples below.

Featured Projects

Sphere in Motion

Landscapes of shifting shapes, patterns and colours

Sphere in Motion is a new hybrid artistic design concept that brings together autonomous objects and immersive wall coverings. For this project, a collective of artists and designers has been invited to explore the boundaries of transformative and immersive experiences within interior architecture.

Through a rich interplay of innovative techniques and scientific research, the works evolve into autonomous artistic expressions in which shifting landscapes of forms, patterns, and colours create a subtile dynamic effect or environment.

Participating artists and designers of Sphere in Motion include the duos Lars van Vianen & Chris Kievid; Alissa van Asseldonk & Nienke Bongers (A+N Studio); and Jetske Visser & Michiel Martens (Studio Martens & Visser).

Dreamscape Sunrise

Tactile experiences unifying material & senses

The Dreamscape collection redefines the concept of artistic tapestries by merging traditional craftsmanship with a deep sensitivity to form and space.

After a decade of designing couture for the renowned Dutch fashion house Viktor & Rolf, Alfhild has shifted her creative focus from adorning the human body to enhancing interior environments. Her work now centers around sculptural, soft-shaped tapestries that maintain a tactile dialogue with humans.

Transnatural invited Alfhild to develop a range of tapestry concepts in close collaboration with an Indian tapestry -family run company- in 2023. This resulted in collection and customized design.

Bespoke Transience Mirror

Reveal oxidation in silver

With years of experience in oxidising silver on glass, this unique material concept reveals gradations of rust with a vibrant, luxurious appearance. The reflective quality is preserved through patterns of geometric shapes, which often also create depth in colour tones ranging from golden brown to deep red and purple.

In 2012, designers Lex Pott, David Derksen and Transnatural launched this unique project, Transience Mirrors.

Today, the Transience Mirrors collection consists of more than 18 standard models. Existing or newly developed designs can be custom-made to suit any setting, including private residencies, hotel rooms, restaurants, bars, lobbies and retail spaces.

Airfoil lobby

Trails of blue oxidation on oak

Drawing inspiration from the motion of windmills cutting through wood, we developed a unique technique that leaves flowing trails of blue oxidation on oak surfaces.

The Airfoil project, commissioned by Transnatural and designed Merel Karhof, features rich, deep blue tones created through a carefully managed oxidation process—a refined and eco-conscious form of wood printing.

Lamina light in restaurant

Dynamic spectrum of colours and light

The Lamina Light sculptures introduce a new interplay of light and geometric colour patterns. The semi-transparent, overlapping slats create a dynamic spectrum of colours that shifts with changing perspectives. The modular black fixture allows users to effortlessly add and personalise a variety of patterns.

The lamp provides both ambient lighting and grazing light along the walls, with adjustable brightness and colour settings. Customisation of the light console and patterns is also available. Please feel free to get in touch to discuss the possibilities.
