Gionata Gatto

Gionata Gatto is an Italian designer, living and working between Italy and the United States. He graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven and later obtained a PhD from the University of Loughborough’s School of Design. Winding between collaboration of different disciplines, his work emerges as a result of a participatory and speculative research method, to breed a territory of transdisciplinary synergy. From the active phase, based on experimentation on technologies, materials and production processes, he derives artifacts and installations performing as perceptual bridges to generate visions about speculative future scenarios. The studio’s projects are initiated in several ways, including commissions from design companies and labels, self-initiated projects or collaborations with public-private partners, such as universities and research institutes.

Mike Thompson

Mike Thompson, a designer and researcher, co-directed Thought Collider, an art/design research practice based in Amsterdam and London. Thought Collider, with co-founder Susana Cámara Leret, explores the meanings and values derived from alternative ways of experiencing environments, particularly motivated by emergent nature cultures. Their work often involves experiments and processual artworks spanning various media, aiming to generate experiential insights from lived experiences that challenge norms. Thompson's work has been published and exhibited worldwide at, among others, the Milano Salone del Mobile, St Etienne Biennale Internationale Design, the Science Gallery (Dublin), Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Rotterdam), and the Museum of Modern Art (New York).

Trap Light

Trap Light proposes a radical new approach to lighting design. By utilising photoluminescent pigments to capture escaping light, Trap Light recycles waste energy back into light. Photoluminesence is a process in which energy absorbed by a substance is gradually released as light. Using the Murano glass blowing technique, this pigment is embedded into the glass body of the lamp, giving each Trap Light a unique pattern and glow. 30 minutes ‘charge’ of light from a traditional incandescent or LED light provides a few hours of ambient lighting. 

Trace Light

Trace Light shuns the use of electricity altogether, creating an intense ambient glow from recycled sunlight. Using photoluminescent pigments in combination with silicon, hand-made photoluminescent skins are developed to convert waste energy back into visible light. As darkness descends, a ghostly trace of light is revealed as the high concentration of photoluminescent pigments radiate recycled light energy as an intense, ambient glow.
