Artist and designer Alfhild Sarah Külper redefines the concept of artistic tapestries by merging traditional craftsmanship with a deep sensitivity to form and space. After a decade of designing couture for the renowned Dutch fashion house Viktor & Rolf, Alfhild has shifted her creative focus from adorning the human body to enhancing interior environments.
Her work now centers around sculptural, soft-shaped tapestries that maintain a tactile dialogue with humans. Her latest collection, Dreamscapes especially designed for Transnatural, introduces an organic aesthetic that offers immersive sensory experiences. These tactile works are designed to harmonize with interiors, adapting seamlessly to different spatial needs and emotional atmospheres. The variation in yarn density and surface height creates lush, cushion-like landings that not only invite physical comfort but also enhance acoustic quality.
Each piece from the Dreamscapes series is handcrafted in collaboration with a family-owned workshop in India, rooted in generations of traditional tapestry artistry. Using sustainable, natural fibers, the tapestriesare made through a unique fusion of traditional tufting and dimensional embroidery techniques. In Alfhild’s words: "Pure Morning Portal is a doorway to a world without worries. Bathing in colored light. A state of calm and joy. Always reflecting your sunshine self. A better world that was always here, that walked beside you. As real as this one, always within reach. Dripping with honey and delight".
Crafted by hand, this piece is composed of 80% eucalyptus yarn and 20% wool, skillfully tufted and embroidered to form a richly layered, tactile landscape. The surface features sculpted heights, giving it a dynamic, textured feel. Backed with high-quality cotton and finished with hand-stitched embroidery, every element is designed with care.
The yarns come from reclaimed factory remnants sourced from The Netherlands, India, and Nepal—adding an eco-conscious edge. Slight color variations may occur due to yarn availability, making each piece unique. Custom variations are also available upon request.
